Scientific Background: VEGFR2 a receptor-tyrosine kinase of the VEGFR family that has high affinity for VEGF and VEGF-C as ligands. Engagement of these ligands induces autophosphorylation, catalytic activation, and recruitment of proteins including Shc, GRB2, PI3K, Nck, SHP-1 and SHP-2. VEGFR2 plays a key role in vascular development and regulation of vascular permeability. Interaction with the HIV-1 Tat protein enhances angiogenesis in Kaprosi's sarcoma lesions. Defects in VEGFR2 are associated with susceptibility to hemangioma capillary infantile (HCI), which are benign, highly proliferative lesions involving aberrant localized growth of capillary endothelium responsible for about 10% of infant tumours.
