Scientific Background: Human CK2a1 is a protein-serine/threonine kinase of 391 amino acid length, with a predicted molecular mass of 45,144 Da. It is a member of the Other group of protein kinases in the CK2 family. This kinase is moderate to highly expressed in most tested human tissues. Orthologues of CK2a1 are amongst the most highly conserved protein kinases in animals, plants, fungi and unicellular eukaryotes. CK2a1 is activated by the CK2-beta regulatory subunit and also by binding p38a MAPK. CK2 is potently inhibited by heparin.
