Scientific Background: Pim3 is a protein-serine/threonine kinase of the CAMK group and PIM family. The Pim3 protein, along with the related Pim1 and Pim2 proteins, facilitates cell survival and proliferation by acting downstream of cytokine and growth factor signalling pathways. It can prevent apoptosis, and promote cell survival and protein translation. It appears to be a tumour requiring protein (TRP), since it undergoes fewer mutations than the typical protein in cancer cells. The active form of the protein kinase normally acts to promote tumour cell proliferation. Pim3 promotes tumourigenesis, and is upregulated in human pancreatic cancer tissue and pancreatic cancer cell lines.
